Inverter failure in Townsville — the warranty path.

What kills a Townsville inverter between year 7 and year 15.
1. Electrolytic capacitor drying.
The dominant Townsville failure mode. Old-generation string inverters used wet aluminium electrolytic capacitors with a service-life curve that halves for every 10°C above rated ambient. Caps dry, ESR climbs, the DC bus ripple rises, and at some point the unit either throws an over-voltage fault or simply stops booting. 2. DC isolator water ingress.
Townsville’s cyclone-driven horizontal rain finds every imperfect seal on a rooftop DC isolator. Once water’s inside it’s a tracking-fault waiting to happen, and the inverter throws a PV isolation alarm that won’t clear. We see this constantly on isolators that weren’t mounted with the AS/NZS 5033 drip-loop and downward gland orientation.
3. MOV (surge arrester) failure.
Townsville sits inside one of the most lightning-active corridors in Australia. Most inverters have a Type 2 surge protector on the DC side; on a near strike the MOV blows safe and the inverter goes offline. Replacing the MOV cartridge is a 15-minute job if the unit was designed for field-replaceable arresters. Older designs require an OEM swap.
4. Fan-bearing failure.
Garage-mounted inverters in Mundingburra, Cranbrook and Annandale pull dust off the slab and through the fan all summer. Bearings load up, the fan slows, the internal heat-sink temperature climbs and the inverter starts thermal-de-rating its output through the hottest part of the day — you lose 10 to 25 percent of peak generation without ever seeing a hard error.
5. Firmware lock-out.
Every QLD grid-code update (most recently AS/NZS 4777.2:2020 and the 2024 DNSP profile patches) requires a firmware push. Inverters that haven’t been touched since their original commission can hit a profile mismatch with Ergon Energy’s current network requirements and refuse to export. What the warranty actually pays for — and what you do.

A like-for-like inverter swap on the same connection point preserves the tariff.
